Mussorie - Place Above Clouds

Mussoorie also known as "queen of hill stations", is a small hill station in beautiful state of Uttrakhand in India. I visited there in July 2014 and one can really forget scorching summers of Delhi once entering the limits of this heavenly place.

Reaching There...

Mussoorie is well connected by road and you really don't want to miss the breathtaking view of the Dehradoon valley as you move up the mountain for Mussoorie. You can choose from following options:

1. Air: Flight to Dehradoon and then by road further to Mussoorie
2. Railway: Train Dehradoon and then by road further to Mussoorie
3. Road: Both luxury and common buses are available from Delhi and other major cities. If you own your car its approximately 6 to 7 hours journey from New Delhi.

Numerous taxi services are also available from Dehradoon to Mussoorie. You can hire a individual car or share with other party depending on your budget and number of people. They have there union rates so there's no chance of over pricing. One such booth is located just outside the railway station.

Place to Stay...

Being a popular tourist destination Mussoorie has no shortage of hotels for all pocket sizes. But its always better to book your hotel in advance. Since my husband always prefer to stay in best place available we stayed at Country inn and Suites and trust me it was worth it. This hotel is situated on the top of a hill, so as you start climbing the hill in your car it feels like you are entering a forest. In addition if the weather is cloudy you can see the clouds entering your room balcony. And off course room service and quality of stay was very good.

Hanging Around...

If you are going there just for a get away from monotonous life then just stay at your room and enjoy the ambiance. Otherwise there are a lot of places to visit. Some of the places which I visited are:

1. The Mall road
2. Kempty Falls
3. Dhanoulti
4. Cloud's end
5. Gun Hill via cable car
6. Mussorie lake
7. Library Bazaar
8. Lal Tibba

You can find more places if you try searching on line but this are the major places. Moreover list is enough for a weekend trip. If you are adventure lover then activities like sky walk, zip line and tree top adventure are also available.

Local Conveyance...

There are numerous taxi providers available in Mussoorie having there shack type shops on road side. You can book the taxi either by opting for their packages or customizing by selecting your choice of places. And yes don't forget to bargain!

Shopping...

Being a female obviously I try to find out what I can buy from every new place I visit. But frankly this is not a place to shop. you can buy some wooden show pieces if you want to keep a souvenir.

Clothing choices...

Since I wen in July it was very pleasant weather, neither cold nor hot so you can select your choice of summer clothing for the months of April to September. During winters it gets cold, temperature being as low as 1 degree Celsius during nights with snowfall. Therefore do take your woolen jacket with you if you are visiting at that time.
Here do note that local people of Mussoorie  were wearing woolen  by evening when I visited there as it rained. And it was surprising for me as being from Delhi I was feeling perfectly fine in that pleasurable weather.

To end it, Mussoorie is a perfect place for a weekend trip to relax and take a break from fast moving life and pollution of Delhi. It is a refreshing place to visit by couples, families or friends.
